Feeling called to the priesthood at a young age, he entered high school seminary, and continued on to graduate from Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary. On May 26, 1979, John Cardinal Carberry ordained him to the holy priesthood for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Missouri. He served as transitional deacon at St. Edward (1978-79), before being assigned as associate pastor to St. Simon (1979-84), Transfiguration (1984-88), Immaculate Conception in Arnold (1988-1991), St. Thomas the Apostle (1991-96), St. Gerard Majella (1996-99) and Ste. Genevieve in Ste. Genevieve (1999-2001). He was made pastor at Immaculate Conception in Union (2001-2014), and then at St. Angela Merici in Florissant from June, 2014 to the present. Since 2005, Msgr. Mitas has been a regular columnist for the St. Louis Review's “Dear Father” feature. In September of 2008, Msgr.
